Survivors relive deadly 1957 Louisiana hurricane in new film All Over But To Cry.
Feature documentary to premiere in Lake Charles and New Orleans.

NEW ORLEANS, LA - May 6, 2009 - New feature documentary All Over But To Cry tells the story of Hurricane Audrey, a legendary storm that killed at least 500 people in Cameron Parish, Louisiana in 1957, making it the 2nd deadliest hurricane in Louisiana history.

Audrey is rare among hurricanes - along with predictable storm surges the fast-moving storm generated a single, giant tidal wave described by several survivors as more than 20-feet tall.

Award-winning filmmakers Jennifer John Block and Jake Springfield spent 2-years producing the film, which started as an oral history project for the Lake Charles-based National Hurricane Museum and Science Center. All Over But To Cry weaves first-hand accounts together with archival photos and film footage not seen in fifty years, as well as 3D special effects, and recreation scenes with actors, many of them children.

"It's not a traditional historical documentary in the sense that there is no narrator or historical data provided," said Director Jennifer John Block. "It's essentially a collection of memories and the story of the storm begins to emerge through those descriptions."

"We're mixing these different elements-the archival footage, recreations, still photos, and special effects-to create an impression," said Director of Photography Jake Springfield. "The scenes are not always a literal depiction of what's being described."

All Over But To Cry will premiere Saturday, May 30th at 7:00pm in F.G. Bulber Auditorium on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles.  The event is presented by the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau and the McNeese Banners Series.

The New Orleans premiere will take place Saturday, June 6th at 7:00 pm in the Louisiana Humanities Center at 938 Lafayette Street in New Orleans. This event is presented by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, which provided funding for the film through a documentary film grant. Both events are free and opened to the public.

All Over But To Cry was produced by Fresh Media, a New Orleans-based production company (www.getfreshmedia.com), in association with the National Hurricane Museum and Science Center (www.nhmsc.com), a derivative of the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road.

Jennifer John Block also produced Reconstructing Creole (2007), which won Best Documentary Feature at the Hollywood DV Film Festival and Humanities Documentary of the Year from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities in 2008. Block is President of Fresh Media. She has taught classes at Loyola University in New Orleans and was a news reporter for WWL-TV in New Orleans.

Jake Springfield produced and directed Why Me, Lord? (2005), which appeared on the PBS series Southern Lens. Springfield was also principal photographer and editor of Reconstructing Creole. Springfield's commercial work has garnered ADDYs, Aegis, and Telly awards.  Springfield has a Masters of Mass Communication from the Documentary Institute at the University of Florida.
